    Linear equation: 2x + 6 = 14. Subtract 6 from both sides to get 2x = 8. Divide both sides by 2 to get x = 4. Check: 2 × 4 + 6 = 14, so the answer is correct.

    Quadratic equation: x² − 5x + 6 = 0. Here a = 1, b = −5 and c = 6. The discriminant is (−5)² − 4 × 1 × 6 = 1. It is positive, so there are two real solutions. x = (5 ± 1) ÷ 2, so x = 3 or x = 2.

Type either problem into the solver above to see the same steps.

    THE BASICS

What Is a Maths Problem Solver?

A maths problem solver takes the problem you type and shows how to reach the answer. It is most useful for checking homework, spotting where a step went wrong and seeing a method you can copy onto paper.

The box above handles arithmetic, linear equations and quadratic equations in x. For other topics, use the specialist solvers. Try each problem yourself first, then compare your working with the steps.

    Maths Problem Solver FAQ

The box handles arithmetic, linear equations and quadratic equations in x. For algebra, inequalities, fractions, trigonometry, calculus and graphs, use the specialist solvers linked on this page.

Yes. Each answer comes with short steps, such as moving terms to one side or working out the discriminant, so you can follow the method.

    Write x^2 for x squared and use / for division, for example (x + 1) / 2. Use * for multiplication, although 2x and 3(x + 1) also work.

Yes. It is free to use, with no sign-up needed.

Yes. Try the problem on paper first, then compare your answer and working with the steps. Your teacher will still want to see your own method.

The box only solves equations that work out to linear or quadratic form in x. Equations with x in a denominator or with powers above 2 need a specialist solver.
